We are all so different, yet so similar in the ways we celebrate and enjoy life. These similarities and differences are the ones we honoured during the third annual edition of the British School of Sofia (BSS) International Festival of Nations.
The International Festival of Nations 2025 brought together representatives of more than 35 countries. Together, we embarked on a cultural exploration journey filled with colour, unique flavours, music, and art from all parts of the world.
The journey started in Bulgaria but over the course of three hours, we travelled to the UK, Romania, Slovenia, Hungary, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain, Türkiye, Russia, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Georgia, Morocco, Syria, Jordan, China, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, the Dominican Republic, Australia, USA, Vietnam, India, and Thailand to name a few.
Our festival has multiple elements, each one chosen carefully to showcase certain aspects of culture and national identity.
This year, the festival started with a series of performances. Each one demonstrated the intricate, authentic beauty of national music and dances.
We were taken to Armenia, after which we made a quick transition to the distinctive colourfulness of Indian dance. The sound of bagpipes pierced the silence next – a distinctive, melodic call that we all recognise, regardless of nationality. We experienced the differences between the Scottish and the Bulgarian bagpipe, and at the same time, we were once again convinced of how similar nations are in their quest for beauty.
Even more delightfully, BSS students took over the stage after the professional musicians. Each one performed a piece of national folklore or distinctive music, entertaining the audience and giving everyone a glimpse into a cultural heritage we may have lacked opportunities to experience otherwise.
The performances continued throughout the day but they weren’t the only element that gave the international festival its multi-cultural charm.
At midday, we witnessed the traditional Parade of Nations.
The Parade of Nations is a proud display of patriotism and national identity.
Participants showcase their national flag, costumes, as well as other elements that are typical and recognisable within the specific cultural and ethnic context.
Throughout the day, BSS guests also explored the various booths. Each one presented culinary temptations, souvenirs, and keepsakes from the respective country. There were also interactive displays, traditional ceremonies, and the most delicious food prepared on the spot.
