British School of Sofia Students Celebrate Outstanding Academic Achievements in 2024

30 Aug 2024

The British School of Sofia (BSS) International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) average score of 32 points surpassed the global average of 30.32 points

British School of Sofia (BSS) marked yet another year of outstanding academic performance in 2024. Both our International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma candidates and our IGCSE students achieved admirable results, demonstrating that the school’s commitment to academic excellence pays off.

Our IB students achieved an average diploma score of 32 points.

To receive their IB diploma, students have to pass three Higher Level and three Standard Level exams. Additionally, they need to write an in-depth extended essay of 4,000 words, pass their CAS programme, and their TOK essay and exhibition.

The top two class of 2024 students achieved results significantly above global averages. They both had IB diploma scores of 40 points.

Such results are of exceptionally high importance for a student’s academic future. Studies suggest that IB students who achieve good diploma results are 18 per cent more likely than their peers to get into an Ivy League school. Top UK universities like Cambridge and Oxford have an acceptance requirement of 38 to 40 points.

In 2024, we also witnessed excellent academic results for our International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) students.

Cambridge IGCSE is the world’s most popular international qualification for students aged 14 to 16. It’s also the one that gives the biggest choice of subjects and academic directions.

The IGCSE grading scale has a top grade of A*. The grading criteria for IGCSE students are based on written exam results, coursework, and practical assessments. IGCSE results are taken into consideration during the university admission process, hence the importance of good performance.

In 2024, one BSS IGCSE student achieved six A* grades on an array of subjects like business studies, first language English, geography, and literature. Multiple other students performed similarly well on their first language English, foreign language, history, and mathematics exams.

BSS has a history of excellent checkpoint IGCSE performance. You can find more information about our results through the years here.
