Deputy Head and IB DP Coordinator of BSS Naomi Van Wyngaarden delivered an informative presentation on academic honesty and citation to our 11th grade students. She highlighted the importance of maintaining academic integrity in the pursuit of knowledge. The IB program places a strong emphasis on academic honesty, as reflected in its policy and the IB learner profile.
The significance of referencing and citation in ensuring that the academic work is original and ethical was also emphasized. Proper referencing is a critical component of academic honesty, and it is important to use reliable sources and cite them correctly to avoid plagiarism.
The intriguing and controversial topic on Artificial intelligence was also touched sparking lively discussions among our 11th-graders. Mrs. Wyngaarden discussed the role of The AI in detecting plagiarism and urged to exercise caution in relying solely on these tools. While it can be a useful tool in identifying potential instances of plagiarism, it is important to use AI alongside other measures, such as proper citation and paraphrasing techniques. “You can use it for specific information. However, should be cited and it should be acknowledged.” explained Naomi.
The lecture ended with the message: „As IB students we want you to act with integrity. You are now responsible for your own actions. Do you want to have integrity and be honest?“
