Change and growth allow us to stay relevant and continue delivering excellent education in a world that evolves rapidly.
The construction of the new British School of Sofia campus is an important part of this process. Now that we’ve come close to the completion of the project, it’s time to reveal some more information about the new building, the available facilities, and the manner in which our new home is going to impact the educational process.
Keeping up with a tight schedule and adhering to the best practices, builders are working hard in the heart of Vitosha district. That’s where the new British School of Sofia campus is going to enable the innovative expansion of a well-established academic institution.
The campus, located on Ekaterina Nencheva Street, provides everything needed for the daily education of approximately 300 students. Every element within the campus design is aligned with the BSS educational philosophy – holistic education that helps children grow and become curious, excited, lifelong learners.
The building and the external spaces associated with it enable the overall intellectual, social, physical, creative, and artistic development of children.
Located on a 3,593-square-meter plot, the building employs a clever architectural approach to make the most of the available space and the urban context. The architectural plan prioritises sunlight availability in the classroom. It also prioritises green external spaces, sports facilities, and recreational spaces.
Through an integrated architectural concept, the building features distinctive functional zones that are effectively connected for ease of access. The building has four levels and a gross building area of 5,800 square meters. The three main components within the building include a main learning area, a multi-functional area with a sports centre, events halls, dining room, library, and dormitories.

The learning spaces make the most of natural conditions, creating a welcoming environment conducive to quality educational processes.
Functionally, the classrooms are separated from the multi-purpose areas, while the architectural plan still enables ease of access. These design and construction choices enable students to make full use of the available facilities.
Classrooms face south, which ensures optimal amounts of natural light throughout the day. The size and setup of each classroom enable flexibility, giving teachers the freedom to carry out learning activities and pedagogical scenarios aligned with the best contemporary practices.
The main hall and recreational spaces tie together the overall architectural concept. This space provides necessary conditions for informal meetings, rest, and peaceful learning sessions out of the classroom.
The availability of additional functional zones enriches the educational process even further.
A sports centre is situated in the western part of the building. It consists of a two-storey sports hall (9 by 18 metres, 5.5 metres high) with a gallery and spectator stands. It is directly connected to the outdoor sports spaces. The sports centre is designed in a way that enables its autonomous use.

Security is prioritised when it comes to the design of the entrance. Access control is incorporated into the functioning of the main entrance (from Ekaterina Nencheva Street). Additionally, we’ve ensured 80 bicycle parking spaces to promote alternative, sustainable modes of transportation.
To make the campus complete, we’ve also envisioned a dining space, library, multi-purpose hall, and specialised rooms (science, ICT) that encourage innovative learning and socialising. The multi-purpose hall on the top floor is connected to a terrace, creating the perfect conditions for meetings, events, and summits.
In an attempt to offer comprehensive educational services, we’ve also planned the integration of dormitories in the structure of the building. This residential zone has a separate entrance, and the premises also face south. Compact design and comfort come together to create optimal living conditions.

The exterior is covered in ceramic tiles, creating a distinctive white exterior. At the same time, it features openings that reveal parts of the interior and add to the depth of the architectural execution.
The white “box” gives the building its recognisable silhouette while also creating a streamlined, modern, and clean vision.
A typographic accent above the main entrance adds a playful and whimsical dimension to the design. The colourful letters immediately speak of learning, knowledge, and a love of literature. Needless to say, the design choice adds uniqueness to an otherwise minimalist, clean, and functional building.
One element that deserves special mention is the southern façade. Colourful sun protection panels create an instantly recognisable visual. On top of the beautiful appearance, however, the panels serve a much more important purpose. Each one belongs to a sunlight control system that enables the tailoring and optimisation of classroom conditions.

The team behind the concept and execution of the new building paid special attention to the functionality of the indoor spaces. Natural light, ease of access, a smooth transition from outdoor to indoor, and the ability to tailor indoor conditions all contribute to a healthy, inspiring learning environment.
To elevate functionality even further, we have prioritised energy efficiency. All outdoor surfaces come with 15 centimetres of mineral wool for effective insulation. Floor heating ensures a pleasant temperature inside the rooms during every season. Additional heating units are placed in larger premises to maximise comfort while still aligning the building’s functioning with contemporary sustainability standards.

We haven’t talked about yet another priority for the new BSS campus, and that is accessibility.
The interior incorporates ramps, an elevator, and accessible restrooms on each floor. The availability of these facilities guarantees optimal everyday conditions for all students and staff members.
The new BSS campus isn’t just a building.
Functional zones, clever interior design, smart architectural choices, and the use of high-quality materials create an educational space that is modern and that can continue evolving as student needs and lifestyles change.
We firmly believe this new campus delivers conditions for innovative learning, and the level of flexibility envisioned will give us the chance to continue perfecting processes and offering students the academic excellence that the British School of Sofia is known for.
