IB PYP Summative Assessment: How the World Works - Grade 1

02 Feb 2024

In the heart of the British School of Sofia, a remarkable event unfolded, marking a milestone in the educational journey of our youngest learners. The first PYP Summative Assessment of 2024 brought together Grade 1 students, teachers, and parents to showcase creativity, knowledge, and skills befitting our precious BSS learners.

This year's assessment was particularly special, thanks to the introduction of our innovative Play-Pretend Learning Centres. These centres, including a restaurant, a vet's office, and a nature station, among others, have been the playground for our students' imagination and hard work over the past months. Through these immersive experiences, children have learned about various professions and environments and developed critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills.

The highlight of the assessment was undoubtedly, when parents were invited to step into the world their children have been exploring. The BSS restaurant was in full swing, operated by our diligent Grade 1 staff, who took their roles very seriously. The menu featured an array of dishes, from burgers and chicken tenders to pizzas and desserts, all served with a flair that impressed and delighted the attending parents. It was a testament to the children's dedication and the effectiveness of learning through play.

However, the restaurant experience was just one part of the event. The students also engaged in a secret code game that challenged their problem-solving skills, danced and sang with uninhibited joy, and presented their knowledge through science and language presentations. It was a multifaceted display of their learning journey, showing the breadth and depth of their growth since the start of the academic year.

These Play-Pretend Learning Centres are just the beginning of a broader initiative at BSS to redefine the learning experience, making it more engaging, interactive, and meaningful for our students. The success of this year's PYP Summative Assessment is a clear indicator of the positive impact these innovative teaching methods have on our children's educational development.

We look forward to sharing more about our Play-Pretend Learning Centres and their role in our curriculum. As we continue to explore new ways to inspire and educate, we invite our community to join us in this exciting journey of discovery and learning.

At the British School of Sofia, we believe in the power of education to transform lives. Events like the PYP Summative Assessment remind us of the joy and wonder that learning can bring to our students and the entire BSS community. Here's to many more such knowledge, skill, and creativity celebrations.
