Fencing

Fencing is one of the first Olympic sports.

Fencing is one of the four sports which has been featured at every modern Olympic games. Currently 3 types of weapons are used in Olympic fencing - Foil, Epee and Sabre. Epee is the heaviest of the modern fencing weapons.

Each weapon has its own rules and strategies. In all three weapons the match goes until 15 points.

Equipment for fencing includes - white jacket, underarm protector, body and mask cords, knee high socks, gloves.

Foil is the lightest of the three weapons, where a single point is scored by a fencer following the rule of "right of way".

Target areas for foil are: valid target at foil - the torso, and the portion of the bib 1,5 - 2 cm below chin level.

Fencing has a number of health and fitness benefits:

  • Improves speed, agility, flexibility and reflexes
  • Leads to scholarships, Olympic and international opportunities
  • Increases focus and concentration
  • Boosts strategic thinking and decision making skills
  • The sport is that it can be continued life-long
